Neuroscience & Non-Communicable Diseases Seminar Series

Speaker: Dr Sarah McIntyre, Linköping University, Sweden

Sarah McIntyre is a post-doctoral researcher at the Centre for Social and Affective Neuroscience, Linköping University, Sweden, which she joined in 2017. Currently she investigates the behavioural and neurophysiological aspects of social and affective touch. She earned her PhD at the University of Sydney in 2014 and then worked with Birznieks and Vickery at Neuroscience Research Australia. Her research interests include psychophysics and peripheral mechanisms of touch perception.

Synopsis:
Communicating via touch is thought to be a pre-cursor of spoken language – both in an evolutionary sense, and in human infant development. This suggests that there should be an intuitive and universal touch language, with an objective core set of primitive elements that can be described in terms of their physical characteristics, and that make up the language of touch. Using a combination of techniques from social neuroscience, neurophysiology, and systems and biomedical engineering, interpersonal touch can be quantified and precisely described in terms of its underlying neural pathways and sensory features.

All welcome. Drinks and nibbles from 3:30pm, seminar starts at 4pm.
