I have always been interested in investigating novel tools or approaches to fight antimalarial drug resistance. During my PhD, I developed a novel drug assay based on the flow cytometric detection of haemozoin to assess antimalarial drug effects. Currently, I am investigating the parasite response to novel antimalarial drug candidates in malaria volunteer infection studies.

Abstract

We developed a novel approach to investigate the viability of malaria parasites in humans after drug treatment. We found that parasite viability may play a critical role in the context of antimalarial drug development, by improving the prediction of drug efficacy and resistance. Thus, assessment of parasite viability after drug treatment should be included as a standard component in antimalarial drug testing clinical trials.
